Dealing with the IRS can be frightening, frustrating, and confusing, and that’s where a tax resolution expert comes in. The IRS operates based upon federal laws. Those laws have been interpreted into procedures for how to do everything at the IRS. From processing of returns to issuing refunds to auditing of returns and to collection of tax debts, these procedures are found in the Internal Revenue Manual (IRM). Tax resolution experts not only know these procedures in the IRM, but also know how to navigate around the massive IRS bureaucracy.

A tax resolution expert can:

  • Handle all contacts with the IRS. It’s important that someone who knows IRS procedures is talking with the IRS on your behalf. Saying the wrong thing and not knowing your rights could lead to an IRS resolution that isn’t tailored to your specific circumstances.

  • Determine the status of your tax accounts (i.e. unfiled returns, monies owed). They can tell you if tax liens have been filed and if the IRS can garnish wages, bank accounts, or investments. They can also see if you’ve been audited in the past, if there are opportunities to lower the audited tax amounts, and to see if there are any penalty abatement opportunities.

  • Guide you through the IRS audit process. IRS can audit by mail or in-person. There are procedures in place to respond to IRS audits and to appeal their results. Learn more about our IRS audit defense services.

  • Guide you through the IRS collection process. Just like audits, the IRS does collections by both mail and in-person. There are procedures for how to respond to IRS collection actions and certain actions can be appealed.

  • Determine the current resolutions available to you. The IRS bases collections on your current financial condition. By doing a collectability analysis, they can determine your options at this time.

  • Handling IRS processing issues. Routine things like processing a check or getting a payment agreement in place can take months depending on how the IRS is handling it. A tax resolution expert will know what department to contact to get things resolved.

  • Handle complex issues like tax lien discharges, offers in compromise, and Collection Due Process appeals. Check out our page on Offers in Compromise to see if you qualify.

  • Tax education. Tax resolution experts can advise you on how to remain in compliance moving forward, eliminating more tax debt in the future. You can also refer to this IRS Taxpayer Bill of Rights to understand your protections.
